MY JOURNEY: one yoga pose at a time

I did not discover yoga until the first day I retired from my career as a school admissions director and tried a class. I was hooked! I took classes every day and sometimes twice a day. My first teacher said, “Through the alchemy of yoga we learn to transform our unconscious, habitual responses into conscious choices that reveal our best selves.” She was right!

I was completely unprepared for the surprises that came along with yoga. I gained a new level of breath and body awareness. I was getting to know my body as if for the first time, to feel at home in my body, and an older body at that! The saddest byproduct of Western civilization, especially for American women is that we are acculturated from a very young age to dislike our bodies. Even as a triathlete I was led to believe the body was imperfect, not good enough. The discovery of yoga is that it is in doing the postures—any posture—our body, its grace, strength, balance, and flexibility can be fully appreciated, enjoyed, loved. In the moment. At any age. I couldn’t wait to share this discovery with others, so I enrolled at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, received my yoga teacher certification in 2018, and have been teaching ever since. Now I teach on Burnalong.com where my on-demand classes can be accessed anytime, anywhere in the world.

Here is an excerpt from my memoir, taken from a chapter titled, “One Yoga Pose at a Time,” written while I was in the middle of my training:

"I want to understand yoga as a physical experience: what the body can do and how it does it is all based on anatomical architecture. The health benefits of the poses excite me—every pose does something good, just as every nutrient-dense food nourishes. Chest openers benefit the endocrine system and glands, such as the thymus gland, which makes T-cells and supports immunity. Inversions, head below the heart, benefit the lymphatic system, lungs, diaphragm, and abdominal organs, in addition to stretching and strengthening posterior muscles, improving bone density, and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Here at Kripalu I am enthralled by a miracle: how all the tissues of the body respond to movement and how movement confers health."

I warmly welcome you to join me on this journey of discovery!
